Wally, the bad news is I threw my back out last week. The good news is it gave me some time to think about what a great canvas ceilings can be.
Here are a few of my favorites so far:
Why not start at the top, right?
The Sistine Chapel is probably the most famous for best-use-of-ceiling..but what about these lesser known, but still fabulous solutions for breathing some life into an otherwise forgotten space.
These images are from an article from
Cool Hunter on New York artist,
Tara Donovan. She created this amazing ceiling sculpture in 2003 from Styrofoam cups and glue. Tara takes ordinary, everyday materials and puts a new spin on them...showcasing them into extraordinary, one-of-a-kind exhibits. Her work is published by visual book press, Monacelli Press (now owned by Random House). You have really got to see the breadth and scope of her work to truly appreciate it...absolutely breathtaking.
Dale Chihuly's thrown glass sculptures are some of my all-time favorites. They look a lot like psychedelic jellyfish. These images are from
The Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. Will and I were lucky enough to see his show last fall at the
De Young Museum in the city. I don't think you could find a kid (or adult) who wouldn't love this ... it's mesmerizing.
These are just a few of several mind-blowing images of
Iranian Ceilings.
Here are some fun alternatives to the over-the-top ones.
StarMurals are custom star murals painted in a five-dimensional format that resemble the real night sky. They are invisible by day and glow in the dark. Pretty cool.
This is a DIY project from from
Apartment Therapy. Decoupage with botanical prints.
For something a little less permanent, there are animal silhouette vinyl decals from
This Next. Could be a great bedtime segue with kids.
And last but not least, there are the Ceiling Ducks. These mallards are the work of
Allen Lopez. They mount to the ceiling and are viewed from the bottom up, are hand painted and come in wood or cast resin. Pretty cute.
